The Evolution of Intervention

This educational panel will provide insight into the clinical trajectory of professional intervention services. Panelists will discuss the evolution from Vernon Johnson’s office based interventions of the 60’s, to todays clinically driven, and specialized, modalities of intervention. This diverse panel will tackle a series of topics from clinically sophisticated cases, ethical challenges, professional certification and oversite, utilizing different intervention modalities and more. While this presentation is appropriate for general attendees, it will provide content relevant to intermediate and advanced clinicians, counselors and interventionists in all sectors of behavioral health.

  • Attendees will gain knowledge related to the accreditation and certification of professional interventionists.
  • Attendees will learn skills necessary to provide services within the Pennsylvania Certification Boards requirements for Certified Intervention Professionals.
  • Attendees will gain information related to specific models of intervention services.
  • Attendees will gain skills necessary to properly screen and assess potential intervention cases.
  • Attendees will gain information related to the ethical practices of intervention services.

Benjamin Seymour, CADC, CIP, CTP

Benjamin Seymour

With over 22-years of experience in behavioral healthcare, Benjamin Seymour is a nationally recognized interventionist, counselor, author, and public speaker. He has served as the founder and CEO of several healthcare companies in the U.S. and is well versed in working with families impacted by addiction. Benjamin is an adjunct professor at the Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine and specializes in working with impaired physicians, nurses, attorneys, and other professionals.

Benjamin is the President of Southworth International and was asked to serve as successor to the late John Southworth. He is also the program coordinator for the State of Idaho’s Physicians Recovery Network, Program for Recovering Nurses, Pharmacists Recovery Network, and the Idaho State Bar’s Lawyers Assistance Program. Benjamin is a Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor, Certified Intervention Professional and a Certified Trauma Professional. Benjamin is a founding member of the Idaho Neuroscience of Addiction Coalition and oversees the successful International Treatment Center Cooperative (ITCC) events, hosted by Southworth Associates.

Tondra K. Frisby

Tondra Frisby

Tondra K. Frisby CDCA, CIP, is the founder of S.T.E.P. Intervention Services. She is a one woman team that facilitates interventions nation wide for families using the Family Meeting Approach with thoughtfulness and care. She was trained in this model at the Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery over 15 years ago. The number one training skill she says is the foundation of hr practice is to “Do No Harm”. She holds a CDCA from the Ohio Chemical Dependency Board and became the first Certified Intervention Professional (CIP) in the State of Ohio. Her private practice is a direct result of her own personal journey with the disease of addiction, which she sought help for and has been sober since September 7,1996. Tondra started S.T.E.P Intervention Services to help individuals and families find a way out of the “Hole in the Sidewalk”. She specializes in adolescent and young adult interventions.

In 2011, she was named Person of the Year by the Sandusky Register, a local newspaper and in 2012. Under President Barack Obama, she received the President's Volunteer Service Award for her work as Director of a local youth after school program called The Nehemiah Center.

Her work in the mental health and recovery arena, was recognized by the Ohio Senate of the 129th General Assembly with an Outstanding Accomplishment Award. In 2014, she was recognized as one of the Top 10 interventionists in the country by the Quit Alcohol Association. The Uniquely Yours Organization, a service group, honored her with its Woman of Inspiration Award. She became one of 11 recovery professionals nationwide to be featured in the 2016 book, "Great Recovery Quotes and Stories to Inspire Great Healers."

In January 2018, she became the city of Sandusky’s Recreation’s Department's first Youth Program Supervisor, expanding her successful work with her community by extending it citywide. In this new role she continues to provide the emerging generation dynamic and impactful programs that include education, experiences and opportunities that will enhance their journey becoming holistically healthy and productive citizens.

In 2018, Tondra was the recipient of the Visionary Award from Visions Entertainment and from the United Runway Enterprise, she received the "I am my Community" Award. In 2019 she received the Award of Excellence, Best of the Best Recreation Program for the State of Ohio from the Ohio Parks and Recreation Association for the Midtown Supper Club, a program she developed, which provides culinary training, food and diet education, music production lessons, dance, art, Mental Health education, and new this year a theater camp, along with other life skills.

Some people ask her, “How does she do it?” And her reply is always, “My strength is always greater than my obstacles” or she might say, “I just keep fluffing my TuTu and dance”. Some of her friends and colleagues have given her the title of Tenacious Tondra, the Lonely Interventionist, from the Island of Ohio!! If you have ever met her, you will know she is unapologetically and authentically Tondra.

Jonathan Rauch,
LMSW, CIP

Jonathan Rauch

Jonathan is one of the most respected interventionists in the field, having facilitated over 1,000 interventions with an extremely high success rate. He is known for his professional approach and case management skills, as well as the pure passion and enthusiasm he brings to his work. His energy and positive attitude carry over to the families and friends struggling with a troubled loved one, giving them the confidence that something CAN be done that getting help for a loved one is possible.

He works effectively with all ages, both male and female. He has worked in residential and intensive outpatient programs treating adults, young adults, and adolescents.

Jonathan is Board Certified, has a B.A. in Psychology and received his master’s in social service from Fordham University. Jonathan is a Licensed Social Worker, a Substance Abuse Counselor, and a Certified Intervention Professional. He is very active with the Association of Intervention Specialists (AIS) and is currently serving as treasurer of the association. He is a member of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW).

Genna Gottschalk, CARC, CIP, BSW

Genna Gottschalk

Genna Gottschalk is a ARISE trained Certified Intervention Professional (CIP), and NYS Certified Addiction Recovery Coach. In addition to her membership, she also sits on the board member of the Association of Intervention Specialist (AIS). She has received subsequent specialized training in MI, DBT, trauma informed care and ED support. Genna is currently pursuing a MSW in Social Work at Columbia School of Social Work, after completing her BSW at the Silberman School of Social work

Genna approaches each client with whom she engages on a person-to-person basis, recognizing that each client’s needs are truly distinct and require a specialized course of action. She engages with compassion and respect to support individuals she works with in every step of their journey. Her approach is intuitive, drawing from her paraprofessional, academic and experiential training to identify the individualized client’s needs. Through precious communication, rooted in a community based relational model, she inspires clients to engage in self-determined change in a manner that is best suited for their personal development.

Genna has experience in working with individuals of all ages. She has worked with clients who present with a variety of addiction, behavioral and mental health concerns. This has given her a working knowledge of how to reach clients who are struggling with a wide range of maladaptive behaviors, including substance misuse, disordered eating, personality and mood disorders, anxiety, depression, thought disorders, OCD, and executive functioning issues.

Stephen Timmer, CIP, CAI, CAS

Stephen Timmer

Stephen Timmer is a clinical interventionist and the founder of Absolute Adventure Radical Recovery, Inc dba Intervention Success in Tampa Bay, Florida with offices in Orlando and Miami, Florida. He is trained in Johnson model, CRAFT, ARISE, Break-Free, Family Systemic, and Love

First intervention models. His interventions usually include work with the individual and family for over a year. Steve emphasizes that we are better for our defeats and challenges rather than our successes and accomplishments, that sober life is the ultimate adventure, and to never give up just before the miracle happens. These ideas permeate his intervention style of love and service with a burning passion for recovery.

Steve has been an interventionist for over 12 years after practicing law in Chicago for 16 years and after recovery from alcoholism 15 years ago. Steve has been working in addiction and mental health treatment for over 16 years and as an addiction counselor and case manager in Tampa Bay, Florida. He is a SMART Recovery facilitator and he has been a full-time interventionist since 2012.

Steve has a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Florida College of Law and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Intervention Relations from Eckerd College. He created a recovery program for lawyers and judges in 2014 and often turns to courts across the country for mental health and substance abuse remedies. He is a member of the Association of Intervention Specialists (AIS), the National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC), the Florida Counsel on Compulsive Gambling, and the Florida Alcohol and Drug Abuse Association (FADAA). He speaks Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Japanese. He is an adventure enthusiast, sailor, triathlete, and marathon runner.
