Special Speaker
Dr. Kara Fitzgerald
Kara Fitzgerald, ND, IFMCP, is the first-ever recipient of the Emerging Leadership Award from the Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Institute in recognition of her work on DNA methylation. She received her doctorate in naturopathic medicine from the National University of Natural Medicine, she lectures globally on functional medicine, is on the faculty at the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM), and is an IFM Certified Practitioner with a clinical practice in Newtown, Connecticut. She runs the competitive Functional Medicine Nutrition internship program for CNS and RDs in training and hosts the podcast New Frontiers in Functional Medicine. Dr. Fitzgerald is also actively engaged in clinical research on the DNA methylome using a diet and lifestyle intervention developed in her practice. Her first study demonstrated a 3+ year bio age reversal and was published in the journal Aging. She has published a consumer book, Younger You, and an application-based program, Younger You Program, based on the study. She lives with her daughter in Connecticut.

Effects of a Diet & Lifestyle Intervention on Biological Aging
The regulation of the human genome by the epigenome is now regarded as a cornerstone, heritable process, playing a central role in the development and expression of both health and disease. Biological age- the measurable rate at which the body is physically aging- can be established by looking at epigenetic changes. Biological age clocks are now widely used in the research and clinical settings to measure healthspan and lifespan.
The potential to slow or reverse biological aging as measured by these clocks is being actively researched. This has profound implications for the growing health-related economic and social challenges of our rapidly aging population. A recent publication by Sinclair and others suggest delaying the rate of aging by even a single year could save 38 trillion dollars in the US alone.
This presentation will cover:
- The state of the research on epigenetics and biological age reversal
- Dietary and lifestyle interventions that have been shown, in both animals and humans, to favorably impact biological age
- Phytochemicals shown to favorably influence epigenetic expression
- Biological embedding: how epigenetic patterns can house trauma (and the foundations of addiction, PDSD, autism, mental health challenges or resilience) that may be shared through the generations
- Interventions that may reverse unhealthy biologically embedded patterns
